Why law firms are devoting time to fathers’ rights issues

On Behalf of | May 19, 2017 | Fathers' Rights

Family and divorce law firms around the country are devoting more of their practice time to fathers’ rights issues. That’s because men often don’t get a fair shake in their divorce proceedings, especially when it comes to issues surrounding child custody.

According to one Nebraska father, he is currently sending $1,300 monthly to his ex-wife for child support payments, which is difficult for him, since he earns $26 per hour at his job. The father said that all he asked the judge for was equal time spent with his children. Instead, he got the hefty child support bill and only gets to see his children eight days per month. Commenting on his child custody orders, the father said, “When you have kids it changes your life. You can’t go without them and [when you do] it wears you down emotionally and physically.”

Fathers’ rights law firms have been appearing around the country to combat the seeming inequality of child custody orders, which appear to be gender-biased, and in some cases discriminatory against men. Census data shows that 82 percent of mothers receive primary custody and 53 percent receive child support. Meanwhile, only 29 percent of fathers receive child support.

At the Law Office of James A. Adams, we believe that fathers should get a fair shake in their divorce and child custody proceedings, and we believe that the law supports fathers in this regard. If you are worried about a child custody or child support issue relating to your children, and you’re fearful that your status as a male could interfere with you getting equal treatment, we are here to help you stand up for your legal rights in court.
