On Behalf of | May 11, 2018 | Paternity And Custody

The custody exchange is one of the most important aspects of a child custody arrangement. You and the other parent will need to exchange custody of your children multiple times per week, sometimes even daily, depending on the agreement in place. This many encounters could become problematic if you and the other parent do not get along well. Follow the tips outlined here to make the exchange safe and comfortable for all involved.

First and foremost, you need to choose a location for the exchange that is neutral and safe for both parties. The best spot is your child’s school. There will be other parents, children and teachers on location. This should make everyone involved feel comfortable and reduce worry about an argument occurring.

Ask someone to occupy your child while you speak with the other parent. This can be another parent or a teacher at the school. It’s best to have the child occupied in the event that you and the other parent get into a heated discussion or need to talk about anything that is not for your child to hear.

Pick a time for the exchange and stick to it. Do not arrive late and do not change the time without giving the other parent ample notice. Arriving late could cause an argument or for the other parent to worry that something has gone wrong. The earlier you arrive, the easier the exchange will be for all parties.

The next time you go to exchange custody of your children with the other parent try to follow the tips outlined in this post. You will be thankful for doing so because it will make all involved feel safe in Omaha, Nebraska.
