Are you ready to be fatherfull?

Certainly everyone has heard the dire results of fatherless children here in the United States. One Gallup Poll indicated that over 90 percent of Americans feel that fathers make unique contributions to their kids’ lives. But have you ever considered the actual effects that being fatherfull can have on your children?

There is evidence to support the concept that when fathers remain involved and engaged in their children’s lives, the kids are the winners. From better behavior to higher school performance, dads can improve their sons’ and daughters’ lifestyles even when they live apart from their offspring.

To encourage this positive impact, the federal Department of Education encourages including fathers in their family programs and recognizing their contributions.

Kids benefit emotionally too when fathers play major roles in their lives. Using research done in the United Kingdom involving 17,000 kids born in 1958, researchers periodically checked in with the participants at the ages of 7, 11, 16, 23 and 33. They discovered that:

  • Kids whose fathers stayed involved had fewer behavioral and emotional problems as adolescents.
  • Teens who self-identified as close with their dads went on to build better marriages.
  • Girls who experienced strong paternal relationships in the adolescent years demonstrated no evidence of psychological distress as adults.

With these thoughts in mind, unmarried fathers should feel empowered to assert their parental rights by establishing paternity and sharing the parenting duties with their children’s mothers. One of the best ways to do this is to learn how Nebraska laws affect your right to be a father to your children.
