Co-parenting a child with a specific medical concern

On Behalf of | Jan 6, 2021 | Divorce

Divorce is never easy, and it’s normal for two parents to have lingering hard feelings and difficult emotions after the process is final. If they choose to co-parent, it will be necessary for the parents to work together to raise the children in a way that is stable and secure. This can be particularly challenging if one of the children has a specific medical concern, such as diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is a particularly concerning issue that will require the cooperation of both parents. It is crucial for Nebraska parents to have a system in place that will ensure the child has the care he or she needs regardless of which parent has visitation. Proper management of this disease requires constant monitoring of certain levels, food intake and symptoms.

When a child has a medical need like diabetes, the co-parenting plan should reflect this. Consistency in everything is key, including in outdoor play, food intake, timing of meals and other factors that could impact diabetes management. When it comes to medical needs, one co-parent will not be able to control what happens in the other home, making it important to have a detailed plan in place.

Co-parenting plans can be custom-tailored to the needs of the individual child and Nebraska family. If one child has diabetes, the requirements for his or her care can be included in the plan as well. Having a thorough and detailed plan will reduce conflict, provide stability for the children and allow for the proper care of a specific medical concern.
